Periodontics
Periodontal surgery is done only in the last stage of the periodontal therapy after the specialist has given the diagnosis of periodontitis (the disease which affects the support system of the tooth). In case of periodontitis, surgery is recommended because the tissue which supports the teeth is ill, but can be cured through surgical interventions in monotherapy. A surgical intervention can help rebuild the support tissues of the teeth which have been destroyed by the periodontal disease.
The therapy for the periodontal disease can be non-surgical or surgical, both aiming at keeping the teeth for as long as possible inside the patient’s jaws. The modern surgical techniques can be done in the dental office by the periodontist with a minimum discomfort for the patient.
The usage of medicine before the surgery, local anesthetics and pain killers administered after the surgical procedure, makes it more acceptable and comfortable.
Reducing the periodontal pocket depth
Under normal circumstances, the bone and the gum tissues match perfectly around the teeth. When there is the case of periodontal disease, the intensity of the inflammation determines the bone destruction and the formation of a deep pocket. These pockets become deeper and deeper, resulting in a big loss of the tooth’s support system. Sometimes, the loss is so bad that the tooth needs to be extracted.
During your visit in our clinic, we measure the depth of the pocket. Our doctors recommend the surgical periodontal treatment, which will reduce the depth, when the pockets are too deep to be cleaned in a proper way through oral hygiene at home.
During this surgical procedure the gum tissue is removed and the bacteria is eliminated, thus eliminated also the factors which lead to the infection. This helps the gum to readapt to the healthy bone.
Periodontal regeneration
If the bone support of the tooth is destroyed, a periodontal regeneration is also necessary.
In order to increase the natural capacity of the tissues to regenerate themselves, our doctors use membranes, bone grafts or stimulating protein. Taking into consideration the fact that the methods for saving the support system of the teeth are varied, the periodontist will discuss with the patient all treatment choices and will chose the best consulting him/ her.
